Glendale was founded by William John Murphy, who was originally in charge of building the Arizona Canal. Murphy was deep in debt from the canal's construction, so he sold the land and water rights along the canal to settlers. To make the area more appealing, Murphy connected Glendale to Phoenix by road and railroad. The city attracted several settlers in the late 1800s through the early 1900s.
