While frequently overshadowed by its neighbor across the bay, Oakland is a distinct city entity that has its own characteristic identity. Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a large influx of San Franciscans moved to Oakland, increasing the population by 124% between 1900 and 1910. This mass migration helped Oakland develop as a city and transportation center of its own. Since it sits right on the East Bay, it was chosen as the end point for the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s. Oakland tends to operate on a fairly temperate coastal climate, with lows of 44 degrees in the winter and highs of 74 degrees during the hottest summer months.

All three of Oakland's professional teams have won a championship for their league at some point in team history. Having these three teams in the city contributed to Oakland's rank of 16th on "America's Coolest Cities" and rank of 1st on "America's Most Exciting Cities." These rankings were also affected by Oakland's large number of entertainment options, including theaters, museums, and other recreational opportunities.

Most of the economy in Oakland revolves around its port, which is the fifth busiest in the US by cargo volume. Though not for any specific company, the general port operations employ 200,000 people in the general area. Its tourism economy is also impressive, generating $1.3 billion in revenue. This is primarily driven by its large concentration of artists.
