In its own words, "Port City" is the "The Next Great City of the South." Those are the nickname and motto of Shreveport, Louisiana. Founded in 1836, Shreveport originally came about as a way for a corporation to have a settlement at the crossroads of the Red River and the Texas Trail. Now Shreveport is the 3rd largest city in the state and the 113th largest in the country.
Shreveport has a fairly warm climate, with temperatures that reach into the mid-90s during the summer and drop to just above freezing during the winter (~36 degrees). It receives a miniscule amount of snow each year, barely an inch, but does receive over four feet of total annual precipitation. This occurs over the course of 101 average annual days of precipitation. Since these precipitation days take up less than 1/3 of the year, Shreveport still experiences almost 2,800 average monthly sunshine hours.
Up until 1980, Shreveport's population steadily rose each successive decade. The lowest percentage increase in population from one decade to the next was 10.8% from 1960-1970. After 1980, however, Shreveport's population essentially flatlined and has remained fairly constant ever since. The 2010 census estimates that Shreveport's population is 199,311 people. Though the Barksdale Air Force Base is clearly the largest employer in the city with more than 10,000 employees, Shreveport is also a major medical center in the state. The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport employs 6,200 employees, while two other health systems each crack the top ten employers in the city.
One of Shreveport's crowning achievements is its prominence in the film industry. Louisiana is the third largest film industry in the country, often nicknamed the "Hollywood South." Some of the movies filmed in Shreveport include The Guardian, Olympus Has Fallen, and Battle: Los Angeles.
