Rugged refinement - 2002 Infiniti QX4 SUV
Introduced in late 1996 as a 1997 model, the Infiniti QX4 set the standard in the luxury sport utility vehicle segment with opulent luxury appointments, above average on and off road performance and head turning styling. Infiniti enhanced the QX4 in 2001 with a powerful VQ35DE 240 hp 3.5L DOHC V-6 engine bolted to a electronically controlled four-speed automatic gearbox, crisp new exterior styling and an elegant new interior. Available in two- or four-wheel drive, the QX4 is assembled by Nissan Motor Company, Ltd., in Kyushu, Japan.
With common underpinnings shared with the Nissan Pathfinder, the luxury SUV's four-wheel drive models are equipped with the standard All-Mode four-wheel drive system and a rugged MonoFrame construction -- combining the best of unibody and body-on-frame design. Smooth, quiet and very willing when the going gets rough, the QX4 is the vehicle needed when running out of road. Underway, this truck is civilized, quiet, and smooth. With the four-wheel drive system, straight line tracking is good, even with a strong crosswind. Off road, the Infiniti is fun to drive and fun for exploring the terrain in mud and deep snow. It never bogs down. The engine is able to handle everything.
The independent front strut design provides exceptional driving feel and enhanced stability along with a tight turning radius and a long stroke for exceptional suspension travel which helps each wheel maintain contact with the ground over uneven terrain. The refined five-link coil-spring rear beam suspension provides long suspension travel, enhanced stability and control of body lean, along with reduced noise and vibration.
Front and rear stabilizer bars improve handling and control while speed sensitive rack and pinion steering provide precise control and driver feedback. Bridgestone Dueler H/T P245/70R16 tires round out the suspension set up with P245/65SR17 tires available as an extra cost option.
The QX4 has a good view of the road with well placed large displays and controls. The heated leather seating surfaces are very comfortable. Extended sun visors are a nice touch. Rear seat passengers are not neglected in this SUV. Strategically placed hand grips greatly enhance entry/exit to the rear seat. Plenty of leg room, dual cupholders, armrest and a center console power point best describe the very friendly surroundings.
The rear seat back is a 60/40 split with center armrest that aids in adding to the available cargo space. The rear seats are designed to fold flat with the cargo floor and even recline, providing additional comfort for the rear seat passengers. The standard body color step rail with step inserts also facilitate getting into the vehicle gracefully.
Ratings & Specifications
Engine performance numbers for the 3.5L V6 are 240 hp at 6,000 rpm and 265 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm. EPA fuel economy ranges from 15 city/19 highway for two-wheel drive and 15 city/18 highway for the four-wheel drive configuration using premium unleaded gasoline. Underhood fluids are easy to reach but not clearly marked. Properly equipped, the Nissan can tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 5,000 pounds.
Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags, driver and front passenger side-impact airbags, high intensity discharge (HID) xenon headlights, fog lights, fuel tank skid plate, vehicle security system with remote keyless entry, vehicle immobilizer system, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, and steel side door guard beams.
Optional equipment includes a navigation system ($2,000) and a limited slip differential ($900) included in a package with heated front and rear seating for four-wheel drive only.
The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2002 Infiniti QX4 starts at $34,150 for two-wheel drive and $35,550 for the four-wheel drive model. Destination charge adds $545.
