The Utilitarian MINI - 2013 MINI Cooper Clubman
With almost nine inches in additional overall length when compared to the standard MINI coupe, the 2013 Clubman adds rear seat comfort and versatility while preserving the overall go-kart fun of the original MINI Cooper concept.
In true MINI fashion, the traditional is mixed with the modern resulting in a unique, but unmistakably MINI appearance and unique interior access. The tailgate carries forward the twin, outwardly hinged "split doors" found on the Clubman's ancestors, while rear seat passengers ingress and egress is eased through a "Clubdoor" access incorporated into the car's right side behind the front passenger door.
Riding on the same chassis, the MINI Clubman mirrors the second-generation MINI Cooper hardtop – both inside and out, in terms of equipment from the radiator grill to the B pillars.
Available in Cooper and Cooper S models, the MINI Clubman is powered by a 1.6L four-cylinder engine. Cooper S models are equipped with turbo-charged 1.6L engine. Torque is transmitted to the pavement through a short-throw six-speed Getrag manual gearbox. A six-speed Aisin automatic transmission is optional.
On the road, that connected go-kart feeling is even better. Control hardware for the performance-tuned suspension includes a single-joint-spring-strut front axle and a multiple-control-arm rear axle – unique in its class.
The MINI Clubman is different from the Cooper hardtop starting in the area behind the front seats and the number of doors providing access to the interior. Stretching the Clubman 9.4 inches and the wheelbase 3.2 inches is translated into additional leg room for rear passengers while the revised body work offers up a bit more shoulder room.
The most dramatic transformation comes in terms of luggage space – the Clubman offers 61 percent more space with the rear seats up or 37 percent more with the 50/50 split rear seat folded flat.
The split rear doors for the Clubman are modeled along the design of the rear doors found in the Austin Mini Countryman, Morris Minor Traveller and the Mini Clubman Estate of the 1960's.
Inside the cabin, displays, controls and switchgear start with a large analog speedometer at the top of the center stack which features a series of unique digital and push button controls for the audio and climate control systems.
Technology makes the MINI Clubman even better featuring: an insertable remote key with push button start, while a bank of overhead switches includes map and interior lighting as well as the vent/open control for the optional panorama sunroof. The front seats fold and slide forward for easier access to the 50/50 spilt folding rear seats.
