2000 Ford Escort ZX2 coupe -
The Escort family has been generally known for low cost plain-jane transportation in recent years. When the sedan and wagon were redesigned for the 1997 model year, Ford sought to improve the total ownership experience. The bar was raised when the all-new ZX2 coupe was introduced in 1998.
For the 2000 model year, the automaker has continued to evolve the product to remain competitive in the marketplace. A simplified, single series lineup -- just one trim level -- a standard rear spoiler, 15 inch aluminum alloy wheels and a new "glow-in-the-dark" rear seat-back release lever to prevent trunk entrapment round out the upgrades and revisions.
The standard Zetec 2.0L DOHC four-cylinder engine is derived from the larger Contour sedan. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a four-speed automatic with overdrive, an $815 option. According to Ford, the ZX2 was designed to be a coupe from the start, not a cheap knockoff of the sedan. The ZX2 is built exclusively at Ford's Hermosillo, Mexico assembly plant.
Also new for 2000 is the availability of the performance oriented S/R Option Group. This $1,495 optional equipment package includes: floor mats with ZX2 logo, performance clutch, exhaust, rear disc brakes, suspension parts and boot knob, P205/55ZR15 tires, unique wheels and upgraded seats with ZX2 logo.
Other available option groups include: Comfort ($395) and Power ($395). The Comfort Option Group includes: leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control and reading lights. The Power Option Group features power windows, power door locks and remote keyless entry system.
At speed, the ZX2 is stable and sure with very strong throttle response across the powerband. Demands for power that normally require a downshift are not needed. A four-wheel independent suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars and rear Quadralink feature make for very agile handling. Bumps and other road irregularities do not ruffle it a bit.
Inside the cabin, exterior noise is held to a minimum even with the driver's window open. The configuration of displays and controls mimic the Ford Taurus, while the driver's seat is a comfortable place to sit for extended periods.
Ford's unique driver's seat memory recline is a plus for gaining access to the back seat without messing up the driver's adjusted seating position. The 60/40 split rear seat helps to make the most of the space available in the trunk and passenger compartment.
By the numbers
