Tacoma is located on Washington state’s Puget Sound, just southwest of Seattle. The city got its name from the nearby Mount Rainier, which was originally called Mount Takhoma by the Native Americans. Port Tacoma, in Commencement Bay, is the largest port in Washington state and a major source of international trade.
In 1990, the city of Tacoma began working towards revitalizing their downtown image with the opening of The University of Washington Tacoma. Following that, through the late 90’s and early 2000’s the Washington State History Museum, the Museum of Glass, the Tacoma Art Museum, the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, and America’s Car Museum all opened in downtown Tacoma.
Downtown Tacoma also has a very successful Theater District. The Broadway Center for Performing Arts manages the Pantages Theater, the Rialto Theater, the Theater on the Square, and the Tacoma Little Theater, which is almost 100 years old. The Tacoma Dome, a large sports and entertainment arena, and the Tacoma Mall are also located within the city. The University of Puget Sound, The Evergreen State College Tacoma Campus, and Tacoma Community College are a few of the many higher education institutions in Tacoma.
Metro Parks Tacoma operates over 50 parks and open spaces in the city. Point Defiance Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country, and includes the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, the Rose Garden, the Rhododendron Garden, several beaches, trails, a boardwalk, a boathouse, a Washington State Ferries dock, an off-lease dog park, and an old growth forest. Ruston Way is a waterfront area on Commencement Bay that has several parks connected by trails, with beaches, restaurants, and businesses along the way. Wapato Park has a lake with walking trails around it.
